There is et there are correspondent à l’expression française ‘il y a’, et there was et there were à ‘il y avait’ :There’s a problem. Il y a un problème.Is there a mall in this town? Y-a-t-il un centre commercial dans cette ville?There were twenty people at the party. Il y avait 20 personnes à la soirée.Cette expression fonctionne aussi avec :

•  les auxiliairesThere will be a winner. Il y aura un gagnant.There must be a mistake. Il doit y avoir une erreur.There is no time to lose. Il n’y a pas de temps à perdre.•  certains verbes ordinairesThere seems to be a problem. Il semble y avoir un problème.There happened to be a storm. La hasard voulut qu’il y eut un orage.Remarques :
•  Dans un langage très familier, there’s est parfois suivi de pluriels :There’s lots of pretty girls around here. Il y a beaucoup de jolies filles par ici.•  Dans certains cas le ‘il y a’ français ne se traduit pas par there is :Qu’est-ce qu’il y a? Qu’y a-t-il? What’s up? ou What’s going on?Il y a 3 kilomètres entre le stade et l’école. It’s 3 km from the stadium to the school. ou The stadium is 3 km away from the school.Bruno est arrivé à San Francisco il y a 24 ans. Bruno arrived in San Francisco 24 years ago.
